A. M. The Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores de El Salvador has presented the “Project for the Protection of People on the Move”, a strategic initiative with a budget of US$3.4 million. This effort seeks to strengthen assistance, protection, and sustainable reintegration for migrants in the country.
The Vice Minister of Diaspora and Human Mobility, Cindy Mariella Portal, highlighted that the 24-month project will raise awareness about the risks of irregular migration. It will apply an intersectoral and inclusive approach, prioritizing human rights and sustainability in its implementation.
This project promotes safe, orderly, and regular migration, funded by the Multi-Donor Fund for Migration. It will be jointly implemented by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the World Food Programme (WFP), and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
The main objectives include strengthening institutional capacity to provide quality humanitarian assistance. Communication and awareness-raising strategies on human rights and the dangers of irregular migration will also be implemented.
The goal is also to strengthen economic reintegration mechanisms, facilitating access to employment and vocational training. Professional certification and entrepreneurship promotion for returnees will also be promoted.
The project will focus on the departments of San Salvador, San Miguel, and Santa Ana. These areas have been identified as having a high presence of people on the move and requiring priority and differentiated attention.
Vice Minister Portal emphasized that the project will have a multi-stakeholder approach, integrating local governments, civil society, returned migrant associations, and the private sector. This coordination will ensure a contextualized and effective response in the territories.
