The Superintendencia de Competencia (SC) has released the report “Online purchases from abroad: Postal and parcel services through digital platforms”, a fundamental analysis that highlights the role of electronic commerce as a driver of opportunities and well-being for Salvadorans. This analysis details how digital platforms and postal services have expanded citizens’ access to high-quality products at competitive prices, reinforcing their purchasing power and stimulating a dynamic and inclusive economy.
The growth of e-commerce since april 2020, supported by the Non-Commercial Online Shopping Facilitation Act, has boosted demand for postal and parcel services. As of December 2022, 98.8% of the volume imported for online purchases arrived in the country, from the United States and China, through courier services, while the remainder was through parcel managers. This demonstrates the importance of continuing to foster healthy competition in the sector, where the variety of options directly benefits consumers by providing them with more accessible and higher quality parcel services.
“This exhaustive analysis not only reflects the reality of this phenomenon in our economy, but also underlines our commitment to promoting more efficient markets in light of competition”, said the Superintendent of Competition, Gerardo Henríquez.
The report also highlights how business models such as dropshipping and locker services allow salvadorans to satisfy their consumption needs without borders, where they can acquire a variety of products, including electronic devices, vehicle spare parts, sports equipment and clothing. At the same time, the entry of new operators has encouraged the deconcentrating of the market, promoting better prices and a greater variety of service options, which increase user confidence and democratize access to these services.
With this initiative, the SC reinforces its mission to promote a competitive and transparent market that offers tangible benefits to salvadorans. This commitment contributes to building an environment of fair competition that drives economic development and strengthens social well-being in El Salvador.
