A. M. The Government of El Salvador has initiated the first phase of the Agricultural and Fishing Census, a key study to update data on agricultural and fishing production in the country. This type of census has not been carried out since 2009, making it an essential tool for understanding the reality of the sector.

According to the Banco Central de Reserva (BCR), this census will allow identifying households and producers involved in agricultural activities, either for commercial purposes or for self-consumption. In addition, the data collected will be used to improve the planning and development of public policies for the benefit of the sector.
The president of the BCR, Douglas Rodríguez, emphasized that the completion of this census, together with the Population and Housing Census to be concluded in 2023, represents a “historical debt” for the country. Both projects seek to update fundamental information for economic and social decision making.
As part of the process, the government has initiated the selection of personnel to work as census takers, which represents the first step in the execution of the study. Subsequently, the data collection and analysis phases will be carried out to obtain a detailed overview of the agricultural and fisheries sector.
With this effort, El Salvador seeks to align its production figures with the reality of the sector, that of neighboring countries and foreign trade. It is expected that the results of the census will contribute to strengthen economic and sustainable development strategies in these key areas.
