With 56 votes in favor, the deputies of El Salvador’s Legislative Assembly authorized the Ministry of Finance to sign a loan agreement for up to US$320 million with the Corporación Andina de Fomento (CAF). The funds will be used for El Salvador’s “Aeronautical Sector Development Program: El Salvador Vuela”, which seeks to modernize and strengthen the country’s aeronautical infrastructure.
This program aims to reduce air connectivity costs and times in El Salvador, thus boosting the tourism sector and the country’s economic competitiveness. Congresswoman Sandra Interiano highlighted the importance of the project, recalling that last tourist season generated US$2,223 million in revenues, with 2.3 million visitors, of which 54% came by air.
Congresswoman Sandra Interiano emphasized that this project will not only benefit tourism, but also the government’s capacity to respond to natural disasters, improving the country’s resilience.
The intervention will cover international airports, including the modernization of the Ilopango airport, which will generate more jobs and investment opportunities.
In addition, the congresswoman emphasized that this project is a crucial step in the strategy to boost the national economy. The contract with CAF also includes operations to strengthen El Salvador’s sovereign connectivity, with investments in digital infrastructure and the construction of a submarine cable, which will reduce international connectivity costs.
The approval of the loan reaffirms the Government of El Salvador’s commitment to economic development and the modernization of its infrastructure, strengthening its position in the regional arena.
