To reduce the vulnerability of the communities bordering the Grande de San Miguel river, the Legislative Assembly approved a budget amendment to incorporate US$8.7 million from an external loan. The funds will be used to rehabilitate the banks in the area, especially in the canton of La Canoa, district of San Miguel.

Congressman Caleb Navarro explained that this investment responds to the damages caused by Tropical Storm Alberto, for which a national emergency was declared on June 16, 2024. The Ministerio de Obras Públicas y Transporte (MOPT) identified the need to execute urgent protection and mitigation measures, since the flooding that the flooding severely affects the mobility and safety of residents.
The works will include the rehabilitation of banks and banks with gabion walls between 3.5 and 4 meters high, as well as erosion control works on approximately 600 meters of the river bank. Trees will also be planted as part of an environmental compensation measure.

In addition, the funds will be used for topographical studies, demolition of damaged structures, earthworks, and earthworks to build retaining walls and berms with selected compacted material. These actions seek to provide an integral and sustainable solution for the protection of vulnerable areas.
Navarro said that he asked the MOPT to review other communities affected by similar situations, such as El Tecomatal, El Picudo, El Consuelo and El Altamiz. He emphasized that this type of projects seek to preserve human lives, material goods and key road infrastructure for the most exposed populations.
