The Municipal Council of San Salvador Centro approved a new ordinance that exonerates delinquent interest on municipal taxes, to provide economic relief to taxpayers and facilitate the regularization of debts. The measure will take effect on May 15 and will be available for 90 days.

The provision will allow the population to settle their accounts without additional surcharges and to access payment plans of up to 24 months, offering a significant opportunity for families and small businesses to stabilize their finances. The exoneration applies to debts accumulated until april 30, 2025 and will cover all five districts of the municipality: San Salvador capital, Mejicanos, Ciudad Delgado, Cuscatancingo and Ayutuxtepeque.

The mayor’s office has urged taxpayers to approach the attention points to manage their request for exoneration and access the benefits of the new scheme. This action is part of a series of strategies focused on strengthening municipal tax collection without affecting the economy of the inhabitants, especially those with financial difficulties.
This is not the first time that the City Council adopts this type of measures. In 2024 a similar dispensation was issued, effective for 90 days between september and december, which applied to contributions for municipal services such as sanitation, public lighting and solid waste disposal.

With this type of ordinance, the administration led by Mayor Mario Durán seeks to boost the local economy, increase tax collection through voluntary compliance and maintain a closer and more proactive relationship with citizens in tax matters.
