The Ministry of Finance has enabled a process for drivers who paid traffic fines between december 20, 2024 and january 26, 2025 to request the refund of their money. Those who wish to manage the refund may do so through the official website: mh.gob.sv
This measure responds to the government’s decision to reimburse all fines imposed during the “trial month” of the new Traffic Law. Although the penalties increased with the reform approved in december, President Nayib Bukele explained that the main objective is educational and not collection.
To facilitate the process, the Ministry of Finance has developed an online system where drivers can enter their data and check if they are eligible for the refund. It is recommended that interested parties complete the process as soon as possible and make sure they have the corresponding proof of payment.
The government has emphasized that this initiative seeks to reinforce citizens’ confidence in the new traffic regulations. It also clarifies that penalties will continue to be applied rigorously after this period, with fines of US$150 for very serious offenses, US$100 for serious offenses and US$50 for minor offenses.
The Ministry of Finance urges all affected drivers to go to mh.gob.sv and complete the refund process.
