A. M. The Viceministerio de Transporte (VMT) has highlighted a notable reduction in the number of dangerous drivers arrested during the recent August holidays. This decrease is part of a comprehensive government effort to ensure road safety and protect salvadoran families and tourists visiting the country. The implementation of a road safety plan with a preventative focus has been key to achieving these results.
VMT Head Nelson Reyes reported that arrests for dangerous driving have decreased compared to the same period last year. This change, observed in drug tests, is an indicator of the positive impact of the new regulations. These measures seek to raise greater awareness among drivers about the risks associated with alcohol consumption.
The official noted that a significant change in driver behavior has been recorded. The figure of 25 arrests for dangerous driving to date contrasts with the 30 arrests last year. This represents a reduction of more than 16% in arrests, which is attributed to a culture of zero tolerance for alcohol.
Reyes also recalled the recent law reforms, which eliminated the blood alcohol tolerance limit. Previously, drivers with alcohol levels between 50 and 99 milligrams per deciliter only received a fine. Now, any level above zero is grounds for a sanction, reinforcing the authorities’ commitment to road safety.
This strategy, which combines roadside surveillance, road safety campaigns, and the use of advanced technology, seeks to transform driving culture in El Salvador.
