The Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) has approved US$150 million in financing for El Salvador to implement the Programa de Infraestructura y Rescate de Escenarios Deportivos a nivel nacional (PRODEPORTE II), This initiative aims to modernize and expand the network of sports facilities outside the San Salvador Metropolitan Area, with a direct impact on the country’s social, community, and economic development.
This new financial support represents one of the most significant investments in sports infrastructure in El Salvador’s interior and marks a key step in the country’s sports decentralization policy. With these resources, the government will promote the rehabilitation, reconstruction, and modernization of 13 sports facilities strategically located in nine departments, prioritizing areas historically with less access to adequate facilities for sports and recreation.
PRODEPORTE II builds upon the progress achieved in the first phase of the program, which received US$115.2 million in funding and enabled the renovation of sports venues in San Salvador and its metropolitan area. These projects were crucial for El Salvador to meet international standards and become the host of the XXIV Central American and Caribbean Games in 2023, leaving a legacy of modern and functional infrastructure in the capital.
Unlike its predecessor, this second phase focuses its efforts on the interior of the country. The departments benefiting from the program are La Unión, Santa Ana, La Paz, Usulután, Cabañas, San Vicente, San Miguel, Chalatenango, and Morazán, where sports complexes of high symbolic and social value will be renovated. Among the most emblematic projects are the Estadio Óscar Quiteño in Santa Ana and the Estadio Juan Francisco Barraza in San Miguel, both considered landmarks of national sport.
The program envisions the creation of safe, inclusive, and sustainable spaces, with structural improvements, universal accessibility, the incorporation of technology, and energy efficiency criteria. These conditions will allow athletes, students, and communities to have facilities that meet international standards, suitable for both competitions and educational and recreational activities.
Beyond the sports arena, the financing approved by the CABEI has a comprehensive approach. Authorities emphasize that PRODEPORTE II will contribute to strengthening the social fabric, promoting healthy lifestyles, preventing violence, and boosting local economies through job creation and the development of services related to sporting and community events.
With this new operation, the CABEI reaffirms its support for El Salvador in building a national sports infrastructure system, complementing the achievements in the capital and extending the benefits of development to the regions. The US$150 million investment is thus projected as a catalyst for sports, social cohesion, and the well-being of thousands of Salvadoran families throughout the country.
