Walmart reaffirms its commitment to developing local entrepreneurs through its “Una Mano para Crecer”, program, supporting the growth of Tortiamigos S.A. de C.V., a salvadoran company dedicated to the production of corn tortillas, wheat tortillas, and snacks.
Founded in 2011, Tortiamigos started with modest capital and sales of just $35 USD. Today, thanks to consumer trust and Walmart’s support, the company has established itself as a national brand, present in all the chain’s stores nationwide.
The partnership with Walmart began in 2013, when Tortiamigos joined the “Una Mano para Crecer”, program, designed to support small and medium-sized businesses in improving their production, management, and innovation processes. This support allowed the brand to professionalize its inventory management, achieve quality standards, and obtain business management advice.
“Our weaknesses ultimately became strengths and opportunities thanks to the support we received from Walmart”, said Morena Marilín Díaz Reyes, operations manager at Tortiamigos.
The company’s growth is a testament to this partnership: from having eight employees at the beginning, they now employ 42 people; from selling two boxes of products per store, they now deliver 12 to each point of sale. Additionally, they have optimized their logistics by centralizing their deliveries at Walmart distribution centers.
For Walmart, promoting the talent and innovation of local entrepreneurs like Tortiamigos is part of its commitment to the country’s economic development. “We are proud to see how, through Una Mano para Crecer, SMEs are able to expand their businesses and bring quality products to more salvadoran families”, said Claudia de Ibañez, deputy director of Social License at Walmart.
Tortiamigos appreciates the preference of consumers and maintains its main challenge to continue innovating and differentiating itself to remain the preferred brand in salvadoran homes. They also invite other SMEs to join the Una mano para crecer program to achieve the same growth path.
