Family remittances received by El Salvador totaled US$831.64 million in september 2026, a decrease from the previous month, though the figure remained higher than that recorded in september 2025, according to preliminary data from the Banco Central de Reserva (BCR).
Remittances fell by 3.68% compared to august
In august 2026, El Salvador received US$863.43 million in family remittances. In september, this inflow dropped to US$831.64 million, representing a decrease of US$31.79 million, or 3.68%.
This monthly decline contrasts with the year-over-year trend for these inflows, which remained above the levels recorded a year earlier.
The BCR’s figures are compiled using the Balance of Payments methodology and incorporate data from banks, remittance service providers, federations, telecommunications companies, and digital wallets. They also include estimates for remittances sent as cash or “pocket money”calculated based on surveys conducted in the United States.
Remittances increased by 1.45% compared to september 2025.
In september 2025, El Salvador received US$819.74 million in family remittances. A year later, the total reached US$831.64 million, an increase of US$11.90 million, or 1.45%.
This comparison shows that, despite the decline between august and september 2026, remittance inflows still grew when compared to the same month of the previous year.
The data published by the BCR are preliminary and subject to revision. Each january, the institution adjusts figures from up to the previous three years, following the International Monetary Fund’s recommendations to improve the quality of remittance statistics.
