In the first 10 days of December, the Defensoría del Consumidor (CD) of El Salvador was able to recover US$92,889.14 in favor of 262 consumers who filed complaints of irregularities. This effort reaffirms the commitment of the salvadoran government to protect the rights of consumers, especially during the high trade season.
Of the amount recovered, 89% corresponded to refunds in the financial sector, benefiting 172 users with more than US$65,000. In addition, returns in the household appliances and furniture (US$7 thousand for 24 consumers), tourism (US$6 thousand for 3 consumers), and vehicles (US$4 thousand for 7 consumers) sectors were also noteworthy.
To strengthen the service, the CD has deployed 45 service days in 27 strategic points, located in shopping malls, parks, squares and mayor’s offices. These days seek to provide legal support to the population and address their complaints in a timely manner.
As part of its activities, the Defensoría also focuses on the verification of scales used in supermarkets and other stores, ensuring that they comply with the certification issued by the Centro de Investigaciones de Metrología (CIM). This ensures that consumers receive the exact net content of the food they purchase.
The “Defensoría Navideña” program reinforces the territorial deployment with inspections and points of attention, promoting compliance with the Consumer Protection Law and other related regulations. This effort includes the supervision of warranties, energy efficiency labeling of refrigerators and the proper use of weighing instruments.
With these actions, the CD reaffirms its commitment to protect Salvadoran consumers, ensuring that their rights are respected and promoting fair and transparent trade.
