The basic food basket (CBA) increased for the second consecutive month in may 2025, reaching its highest value since september 2024, according to data from the Oficina Nacional de Estadísticas y Censos (ONEC). The report indicates a monthly increase of US$0.95 in urban areas and US$0.97 in rural areas.

In urban areas, the price reached US$248.28, driven by increases in products such as eggs, vegetables, and rice. This figure represents the highest level in eight months, although it remains below the same month in 2024.
In rural areas, the value reached US$179.74. Except for fats, fruits and milk, all products registered increases, especially eggs, tortillas, and rice.

The ONEC specified that, although the urban basket increased compared to april by US$0.94, it is still US$8.3 cheaper than in May last year, when it reached US$256.5. The behavior varies according to area and product.
In response to these increases, the government has promoted several strategies to address the situation, such as the creation of a law to promote competitiveness in basic products and the expansion of Agromercados in the country.

In addition, supply centers have been set up to improve distribution and access. These actions seek to alleviate the impact of high prices and stabilize the cost of living in the country.
