El Salvador currently has an electricity generation capacity that far exceeds national demand and continues to drive the country’s development, prioritizing significant energy investment for transmission and storage. ETESAL, the sole energy transmission company in El Salvador, guarantees energy transfer through lines and substations.
ETESAL, president Edwin Núñez explained that the country has an installed capacity of over 3,000 megawatts, while peak consumption reaches 1,162 megawatts. This difference, he stated, reflects the government’s vision of strengthening the energy system and ensuring a stable and high-quality supply.

Núñez explained that El Salvador has a vast energy capacity that far surpasses national demand; this is thanks to the president’s vision of providing increasingly high-quality services.
He also highlighted the projects, mentioning their strategic importance. “We are finishing two substations. One is in Tamanique, which will contribute to the development of the coastal area, both in La Paz and La Libertad. It is impressive what is happening with these new projects. What do they need? Energy, and quality energy at that”, he affirmed.
The other substation nearing completion is in Morazán, and he reported that this is part of the work to create a ring grid in the eastern region. The San Miguel and La Unión substations already exist, and a new one will be built in Pasaquina.

He reported that all the projects are included in an expansion plan. The first phase is planned for 2025-2034, and the second for 2040, meaning they are building substations where they are needed. He also mentioned that they will launch a pilot phase of the National Energy Storage Plan, for which battery banks will be installed at each substation by ETESAL.
