El Salvador highlighted the growing role of artificial intelligence (AI) in trade facilitation and various sectors of the national economy before the World Trade Organization (WTO). Minister of Economy María Luisa Hayem participated in the launch of the WTO’s World Trade and Tech Day alongside the organization’s Director-General, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, and ministers from Singapore, Iceland, and Jamaica.
During the session dedicated to analyzing the relationship between artificial intelligence and trade, Hayem explained that this technology already plays a significant role in trade facilitation processes in El Salvador. Its use has also extended to various productive and service activities, where it serves as a tool to support processes and develop new solutions.
Among the sectors already utilizing artificial intelligence in the country, the official cited the textile industry, call centers, financial services, and logistics services. The presence of this technology in these areas reflects the advancement of digital tools that can be integrated into various economic and commercial activities.
Hayem also presented the progress El Salvador has made in promoting both the adoption and development of AI-based solutions. She highlighted the implementation of the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy 2026, designed as a key instrument to guide the development and use of this technology in the country.
Another advancement noted by the minister was the creation of the National Artificial Intelligence Agency, an institution established as part of efforts to strengthen the ecosystem surrounding this technology and foster the development of AI-based solutions.
These initiatives are complemented by the adoption of the Law for the Promotion of Artificial Intelligence and Technologies, another instrument mentioned by Hayem during her participation. According to the official, these actions are part of broader efforts to create conditions that facilitate the adoption and development of AI-based technologies. The minister also maintained that these advances, together with security conditions and the business climate, are helping to position El Salvador as a place where an increasing number of companies dedicated to developing artificial intelligence-based solutions are being founded and established.
