The Ministry of Finance announced that, starting this thursday, january 15, 2026, taxpayers will be able to obtain their Tax Identification Number (NIT) in digital format through the Ministry’s website. This measure, coordinated by the General Directorate of Internal Taxes (DGII), aims to modernize tax procedures and facilitate access to this key document for individuals and legal entities.
With this update, NIT assignment will be free, universal, and entirely digital for those who must register in the Taxpayer Registry System. The document will be issued as a legally valid graphical representation, allowing users to use it for tax and administrative procedures without needing a physical copy.
Authorities clarified that NITs previously issued in physical format remain valid, so an immediate exchange will not be mandatory. Likewise, the provision remains in force according to which, for Salvadoran natural persons of legal age, the NIT number corresponds to the Documento Único de Identidad (DUI) assigned by the respective registry.

The service will be available online through the Ministry of Finance’s official portal, allowing taxpayers to complete the process remotely, reducing wait times and travel, and strengthening the digitalization of public services.
To guide users during the transition and answer questions, the DGII has enabled several support channels. Taxpayers can contact the call center at 2237-3444, send a message via WhatsApp to 7073-8444, or email inquiries to asistenciadgii@mh.gob.sv and declaracioninternet@mh.gob.sv
With the implementation of the digital Taxpayer NIT, the Ministry of Finance is taking another step toward simplifying procedures and modernizing the tax system, facilitating compliance with tax obligations and access to online services for citizens and businesses.
