El Salvador’s ambassador to the United States, Milena Mayorga, announced that the country is pursuing a new strategy to strengthen its international air connectivity: attracting the U.S. airline Southwest Airlines to operate routes to El Salvador.
The diplomat explained that this initiative is part of the country’s efforts to expand air transportation options, facilitate travel for Salvadorans living abroad, and continue promoting tourism growth.
A Large salvadoran market in the United States
One of the key factors supporting this strategy is the size of the salvadoran market in the United States. According to the ambassador, approximately 2.5 million salvadorans live in the U.S., representing a significant demand for flights between the two countries.
This constant flow of travelers includes family visits, tourism, business trips, and participation in cultural and sporting events. The addition of new airlines could expand the available options and foster greater competition in the air travel market. Boosting Tourism and International Events
The strategy also relies on the growth the salvadoran tourism sector has experienced in recent years. According to Mayorga, the country has seen one of the highest rates of tourism growth in the Americas, driven by hosting high-level international sporting events and shows.

These activities have helped position El Salvador as an increasingly visible destination in the region, attracting foreign visitors and strengthening the tourism industry.
Air connectivity as an engine for development
The arrival of a low-cost airline like Southwest Airlines could represent a significant step toward improving the country’s air connectivity. These types of airlines typically offer competitive fares and an extensive route network within the United States, which would facilitate access for more travelers to El Salvador.
Furthermore, the presence of new airlines in the market usually generates greater dynamism in the sector, benefiting both tourists and the salvadoran diaspora that frequently travels between the two countries.
Strategy to strengthen relations with the diaspora
The potential addition of Southwest Airlines is also related to the salvadoran government’s efforts to strengthen ties with the salvadoran community residing in the United States.

Access to more direct flight options or better fares can make it easier for salvadorans abroad to visit the country more frequently, which in turn contributes to tourism and economic activity.
A new stage in tourism expansion
The effort to attract Southwest Airlines reflects El Salvador’s intention to continue expanding its presence in the international tourism market and improve its air connectivity with the United States, its main migration partner and one of the most important markets for tourism.
If it materializes, this initiative could become a significant step in consolidating the country as an accessible destination for international visitors and strengthening ties with the salvadoran community abroad.
