The president of the Defensoría del Consumidor, Ricardo Salazar, reported that vegetable prices at the La Tiendona wholesale market, one of the country’s main supply centers, remain stable, following a verification carried out this Monday as part of nationwide monitoring operations.
According to the official, the first price survey conducted in the early morning hours showed stable prices for products such as tomatoes and green chili peppers, as well as price decreases for some foods like lettuce and lemons, among other monitored products.
He explained that these verifications are part of the actions aimed at monitoring price trends in basic food items and detecting any irregularities that could affect consumers or create market distortions.
In addition to price monitoring, the Agency also assessed supply conditions at the wholesale market, where, according to Salazar, operations were found to be proceeding normally.

The official stated that, to date, there are no production or logistical risks that could compromise the national supply of fruits and vegetables, thus ruling out scenarios that point to shortages or speculative price increases.
He asserted that there is no evidence to support reports of possible price gouging on these products and reiterated that the observed conditions indicate market stability.
Salazar indicated that these types of inspections are part of a strategy of ongoing monitoring at key supply points, such as La Tiendona, where many merchants acquire products for distribution to various markets throughout the country.
The Defensoría del Consumidor also highlighted that, from january to date, it has conducted 7,500 inspections across various categories of basic goods, including vegetables, eggs, chicken, beef, and other essential consumer products.

Authorities also reminded the public that price gouging or unjustified increases in the prices of essential food items can constitute a serious offense, with penalties of up to 500 minimum wages, according to current regulations.
The Defensoría del Consumidor further reiterated that it maintains channels for citizen complaints, including the 910 hotline and WhatsApp number 7844-1482, to report potential price abuses or irregularities.
Through these inspections, the agency stated that it aims to monitor market behavior, protect consumers, and maintain oversight of essential products for salvadoran families.
