The Legislative Assembly approved an amendment to the 2026 Budget Law to allocate US$2.5 million to the Dirección de Mercados Nacionales (DMN), with the aim of strengthening the administration of public markets, improving services for vendors and consumers, and ensuring the proper functioning of these commercial spaces throughout the country.
The initiative was supported with 57 votes and will allow the Dirección de Mercados Nacionales (DMN), to have additional resources to address priority operational needs. The funds will be channeled through the Office of the President and seek to boost the economic activity that takes place daily in the markets managed by the institution.
According to the approved measure, US$2,123,000 will be allocated to the acquisition of goods and the contracting of basic, general, and professional services. These resources will cover essential needs for the operation of the markets, as well as strengthen administrative and operational areas that contribute to better service for vendors and users.

Furthermore, US$377,000 will be invested in fixed assets to modernize and strengthen the institution’s technological infrastructure. Among the planned acquisitions are furniture and equipment for the DMN’s Technology, Networks, and Infrastructure Unit, as well as video screens and audio systems for the Mercado San Miguelito, among other equipment.
Authorities believe these investments will contribute to optimizing the management of national markets, spaces that play a vital role in the local economy by generating employment, facilitating trade, and supplying products to thousands of salvadoran families.

The approved funds come from a US$2.5 million surplus in Income Tax revenue collected through april of this year. This allowed for the budget modification without affecting other allocations in the current budget.
With this measure, the Government seeks to continue strengthening the network of national markets through operational, technological, and infrastructure improvements, with the aim of providing more efficient, organized, and suitable spaces for commercial activity and customer service.
