The Empresa Transmisora de El Salvador (ETESAL) laid the first stone for the San Miguel–Morazán Transmission Line, a project aimed at strengthening the electrical infrastructure of the eastern region of the country and connecting 10,000 new users to the national power grid.
The project will directly benefit the departments of San Miguel and Morazán and includes a 34.5-kilometer route through the municipalities of San Miguel, Uluazapa, Comacarán, El Divisadero, and San Francisco Gotera. The new infrastructure will consist of 109 double-circuit towers, a voltage of 115 kV, and a capacity of 130 MVA.
According to ETESAL, the line will be accompanied by the construction of the Morazán Substation, which will create new connection and delivery points to the national transmission grid. This will increase the area’s electrical infrastructure’s capacity to transfer energy to eastern El Salvador.
One of the project’s objectives is to improve voltage regulation in the area, as well as increase the grid’s capacity to meet current and future needs. This is particularly relevant given the growing electricity demand associated with the development of housing, businesses, hospitals, educational centers, and industries.
ETESAL explained that the expansion is also designed to prepare the infrastructure for a future increase in electricity consumption. The new line will provide a grid with greater capacity to support the economic and productive development of the departments of San Miguel and Morazán.
In the future, the San Miguel–Morazán Transmission Line will form part of an electrical ring in the eastern region of the country. This configuration will allow for greater grid capacity and backup in the event of contingencies and during maintenance work, strengthening the continuity of electrical service.
The addition of new users and the increased transmission capacity can also facilitate the expansion of productive activities that require an adequate electricity supply. In this way, the project seeks to anticipate the growth in demand and create the infrastructure necessary for the development of the eastern region.
ETESAL stated that this project is part of a planned expansion of the national transmission network, designed to anticipate the country’s energy needs. The new infrastructure will expand network coverage and strengthen the electricity supply for homes, businesses, and productive sectors in San Miguel and Morazán.
