The Ministerio de Obras Públicas y de Transporte (MOPT) will receive a budget allocation of $2,235,021 to carry out rural road improvement projects in the department of Cabañas. The amendment was approved during the 127th plenary session with the votes of 59 legislators, through a revision to the 2026 Budget Law.
The funds will be allocated to a project that includes work on various roads located at the El Zapote turnoff, the village of La Danta, the area around the Integración Bridge, and certain sections within the municipality of Victoria. The projects are part of the Progressive Rural Roads Program and the National Road Improvement Program.
The project involves work on 14 kilometers of tertiary roads in Cabañas, where improvements will be made to the road surface conditions. Paving and drainage work will also be carried out, in addition to the construction of pedestrian access points.
The National Program for Progressive Rural Roads and Road Improvement was launched in 2018. To implement the program, the government secured a US$30 million loan from the Instituto de Crédito Oficial (ICO) of the Kingdom of Spain.
With an investment of US$2.23 million, the Ministerio de Obras Públicas y de Transporte (MOPT) aims to improve rural road infrastructure in areas where these roads are used by residents and people traveling between communities. Among the projects included is the section of the Integración Bridge, which borders Honduras.
During the budget reform debate, Francisco Menjívar, a representative from the Nuevas Ideas party, noted that the project will improve connectivity in the border area, where there are salvadoran families with dual citizenship, as well as exchanges between communities and commercial activities.
Congresswoman Nancy Alfaro emphasized the importance of maintaining rural roads in good condition, given their role in transporting agricultural crops, enabling students to travel to their schools, and connecting communities.
Thus, the allocation of US$2,235,021 to the MOPT budget will fund the planned projects in Cabañas, with initiatives focused on improving tertiary roads, facilitating mobility, and strengthening road connections in the areas covered by the project.
