The Banco Central de Reserva (BCR) announced the beginning of the field operation of the V Agricultural Census and I Fishing Census 2025, which will begin this may 2 from 66 sub-sites distributed nationwide. This project will provide detailed information on agricultural and fisheries production throughout El Salvador.

During the operation, all producer households will be visited, regardless of their size, to identify crops, production areas, agricultural and fishing practices, inputs, employment generated and other relevant data for the country’s economic planning.

The BCR selected more than 6,700 people to carry out the census, who were chosen from more than 31,000 applicants. These technicians have been intensively trained in agricultural and fisheries issues and in the use of digital tools.
Data collection will be carried out throughout the country under security conditions guaranteed by the government of President Nayib Bukele. In addition, there will be technical support from FAO, which has accompanied the process from the planning stage.

As part of the preparations, three experimental censuses were carried out: the first in San Pablo Tacachico, La Libertad; the second in Zacatecoluca, La Paz; and the third at the national level, to refine the technical and methodological mechanisms of the final operation.

The investment for this census amounts to US$9.3 million, mainly focused on technology to achieve a 100% digital data collection. With this initiative, the BCR seeks to lay solid foundations for the country’s economic policy in the agricultural and fisheries sector.
