El Salvador has been chosen to host the 40th Regional Conference of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) for Latin America and the Caribbean, to be held in 2028. This designation strengthens the country’s position in multilateral forums related to food security, agriculture, and sustainable development.
The decision was announced during the current edition of this regional forum, held in Brazil, where salvadoran authorities reaffirmed the national commitment to effective technical cooperation focused on concrete results.
A strategic forum for the region
The FAO Regional Conference is one of the main official forums on food and agriculture in Latin America and the Caribbean. In this forum, Member States analyze common challenges, establish work priorities, and define commitments to strengthen food security and rural development.

El Salvador hopes that the 2028 edition, to be held in San Salvador, will contribute to consolidating regional agreements in key areas such as:
• Climate resilience
• Agricultural innovation
• Productive inclusion
• Territorial development
Commitment to food security
During the meeting, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Adriana Mira highlighted the region’s potential to contribute to global food security.
“Latin America and the Caribbean have enormous potential to contribute decisively to global food security. This capacity only materializes when we strengthen our production systems with a strategic vision, effective cooperation, and stable environments that allow us to invest and produce with confidence”, she said.

The official emphasized that El Salvador is prepared to contribute its experience and progress, while also seeking to expand alliances, deepen cooperation with the FAO, and actively contribute to a transformative regional agenda.
She also reiterated the country’s commitment to effective multilateralism and results-based technical cooperation, aligned with the realities of the territories.
Priority areas of the forum
The FAO Regional Conference is structured around pillars that guide the work of member countries, including:
• Efficient, inclusive, and sustainable production
• Eradication of hunger and strengthening of food security and nutrition
• Sustainable management of natural resources and adaptation to climate change
• Reduction of inequalities, combating poverty, and building resilience
These areas will be central to the agenda when El Salvador assumes the host country in 2028.

Salvadoran representation
Also participating in the forum were the Vice Minister and Acting Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Óscar Domínguez, and Ambassador Efrén A. Bernal, El Salvador’s diplomatic and consular representative to Italy and to the FAO.
With this appointment, the country takes on the challenge of organizing a high-level regional meeting that will bring together authorities, specialists, and international representatives to define joint actions to address the food and agricultural challenges of Latin America and the Caribbean.
