The Ministerio de Agricultura y Ganadería (MAG) is preparing to launch a new key product in the fight against the cattle screwworm. This initiative comes in response to the critical shortage of inputs in the market, a situation that has generated great concern among producers.

According to Mateo Rendón, spokesman for the Mesa Agropecuaria, Rural e Indígena, the disease had been eradicated in the region in the 1990s. Therefore, the reappearance of the pest in january 2025 took the industry by surprise, as it did not have any drugs to deal with it.

The new drug, formulated entirely in El Salvador, has already passed the testing and validation phases with successful results. Rendón pointed out that this drug will not only eliminate the worm inside the wounds, but will also act as an antibiotic and repellent.
This innovative product will be suitable for any animal species and will be marketed at a regulated price. It will be distributed in tiangues and strategic points of the country, facilitating access to affected livestock farmers.

Although the MAG initially imported medicines from Brazil and Colombia, the Mesa Agropecuaria confirmed that it was not enough. This situation prompted the government to collaborate with national laboratories to develop a solution adapted to El Salvador’s needs.
