The Government of El Salvador is preparing to carry out one of the largest renewal processes for the Unique Identity Document (DUI) in the country’s history. The Registro Nacional de las Personas Naturales (RNPN) announced that in 2026, more than 1.6 million salvadorans residing in the country and approximately 100,000 compatriots abroad will need to renew their documents due to their expiration.
With the goal of providing a streamlined, modern, and accessible service, the RNPN will increase the operational capacity of the DUI Centers, open three temporary centers, and ensure that the process is carried out without an increase in the processing fee, which will remain at $10.31. In addition, citizens will be able to pay online or at any banking institution, making the process easier for everyone, both inside and outside the country.
The president of the RNPN, Fernando Velasco, emphasized that this massive renovation is part of the modernization of public services, ensuring shorter service times—10 to 15 minutes for renewals or replacements—and more comfortable spaces for users. “We want every salvadoran to have a fast and efficient experience”, he emphasized.
With 35 integrated security measures, the salvadoran DUI continues to be a high-tech and internationally recognized document. This massive renovation reaffirms the government’s commitment to a secure, modern, and accessible identity for all salvadorans, within and outside our borders.
