A. M. President Nayib Bukele has publicly denounced that several mayor’s offices throughout the country have implemented abusive charges and disguised illegal fees under concepts such as “licenses” and “special charges”. Through his social networks, he pointed out specific examples such as the municipality of Ahuachapán Centro, which is imposing unjustified fees on telephone vendors, and the municipalities of San Miguel Norte and Usulután Norte, where excessive fees have been applied to taxpayers.
In view of this situation, the President has given a deadline until this Monday for all municipalities to revert these charges and restore the fees, licenses and permits to the values that were in force before may 1st of last year. Bukele emphasized that there are few exceptions to this practice and that the measure seeks to guarantee justice for affected citizens and businessmen.
In his message, the President warned that those municipalities that do not comply with the order will be denounced before the Fiscalía General de la República for the crime of extortion. He also assured that the government will not allow administrative abuses that harm the productive sectors of the country, especially micro, small and medium entrepreneurs.
Bukele also reiterated his commitment to the economic recovery of El Salvador, noting that the country suffered decades of mismanagement and corruption that affected development. He emphasized that his administration is working to strengthen the economy and that he will not allow arbitrary practices of some officials to hinder this effort.
The President urged the 44 municipal councils to comply with the directive and avoid legal sanctions. He stressed that his government will not allow bureaucrats to harm small businesses, which represent a fundamental pillar for the country’s economic growth.
