The Chargé d’Affaires of the U.S. Embassy, Naomi Fellows, participated in an event to recognize the work of the partners of the Programa de Beca Salvadoreño-Americano (SASP) an initiative that expands study opportunities for young salvadorans in the United States.

This year, the SASP program received US$20,000 in donations from Universidad Gerardo Barrios, and Universidad de Oriente joining other universities and companies such as Delta, American, and United Airlines, which have contributed to the program and facilitated the international mobility of scholarship recipients. During the event, Chargé d’Affaires Fellows stated, “Being part of SASP means giving young people from this country experiences so they can return with new ideas, new skills, and a broader vision of what El Salvador can become”.

The SASP is an example of an innovative model of academic cooperation that fosters educational opportunities and helps returning students become agents of change. The U.S. Embassy recognizes and appreciates the ongoing contributions of all partners who have helped SASP make a positive impact on higher education and youth leadership.

Since its inception 12 years ago, SASP has received US$8,000,000 in donations from salvadoran and U.S. institutions and businesses, in addition to an initial contribution of US$670,000 from the U.S. government. Working in partnership with the Centro Cultural Salvadoreño Americano (CCSA), the program’s implementing organization, it has helped 551 salvadoran students study or complete internships in the United States.

El Salvador is among the countries in the Western Hemisphere with the largest increases in students participating in educational programs in the United States, registering a 10.8% increase in 2024.
