El Salvador took a significant step in strengthening its energy infrastructure with the inauguration of the new Surf City electrical substation, located in the district of Tamanique, municipality of La Libertad Costa. The project is part of the efforts to boost the country’s social and economic development, especially in one of the areas with the highest growth in tourism and investment.
The new infrastructure has a capacity of 50 megawatts and is the first substation in El Salvador to use Gas-Insulated Switchgear (GIS) technology. This system uses special gas as an insulator for electrical energy, allowing the substation to operate in a smaller space, with greater efficiency and lower maintenance requirements compared to traditional technologies.
The project also included the construction of a 115-kilovolt transmission line between Talnique and Tamanique. The total investment amounted to $35 million and was carried out by the Empresa Transmisora de El Salvador (ETESAL), the entity responsible for the development and modernization of the national electricity transmission network.

During the inauguration, ETESAL President Edwin Núñez emphasized that the new substation will guarantee a more reliable and stable electricity supply for the population and for productive activities in the area. He also noted that the project will enable distribution companies to optimize the quality of service they provide to their customers.
The Vice President of the Republic, Félix Ulloa, who participated as a guest of honor, stated that this infrastructure is part of the transformation the country is undergoing and contributes to consolidating El Salvador as a regional leader in clean energy generation. He explained that the availability of reliable energy is a key factor in attracting investment and strengthening economic development hubs.

The Minister of Tourism, Morena Valdez, highlighted that the benefits of the substation will not be limited to the business sector. He indicated that approximately 85,000 residents of La Libertad will also benefit from a more stable electricity service, which will contribute to improving conditions for economic growth, tourism, and the quality of life in the area’s communities.
With this project, authorities seek to strengthen the energy capacity of Surf City and its surroundings, a region that has experienced significant economic growth in recent years thanks to tourism, private investment, and infrastructure projects promoted by the government.
