The US Embassy in El Salvador reported on a joint medical mission at the Hospital Nacional de Chalatenango as part of the regional military exercise Centam Guardian, taking place in the country from april 16 to 27.
During this mission, US doctors are working in coordination with salvadoran healthcare personnel in a three-day medical brigade that began on tuesday, april 21, and concludes this thursday. The initiative’s main objective is to provide care to patients in the area, especially those suffering from chronic illnesses and requiring specialized attention.
The medical team is part of Fuerza de Tarea Conjunta Bravo (JTF-Bravo), a unit that has been conducting medical brigades in various countries of the region since 1992 as part of its cooperation efforts. On this occasion, specialists have focused their efforts on treating patients with conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.
According to Keva Luke, deputy spokesperson for the embassy, one of the goals of this campaign is to help reduce waiting times at the Hospital Nacional de Chalatenango by facilitating access to consultations with internists for patients referred from other health units.
Sergeant Maria Vickers, head of the medical brigade, explained that the goal is to treat approximately 300 people during the three-day event. By the second day, dozens of patients had already been seen, making progress toward this objective.
Locally, the hospital’s deputy director, Florence Alemán, highlighted the positive impact of the initiative, noting that this event allows for specialized care to be offered to patients who, in many cases, are seeing an internist for the first time. She also indicated that an average of 60 patients are scheduled to be seen each day, which contributes to improving the hospital’s capacity to respond to patients.
In addition to providing direct patient care, the medical mission strengthens the exchange of knowledge between healthcare professionals from both countries, promoting joint learning and capacity building within the salvadoran healthcare system.
This activity is part of the cooperative efforts underway during Exercise Centam Guardian, which brings together military forces from the region to improve coordination and preparedness for various scenarios, including humanitarian aid missions.
The medical mission in Chalatenango thus reflects a joint effort focused on both the well-being of the population and the strengthening of international collaboration in the health sector.
