The minister of Public Works, Romeo Rodríguez, presented a proposal to the Legislative Assembly to extend the validity of vehicle license plates in the 2011 format until august 31, 2026. Currently, the extension established in the Law on Tax Rights for the Circulation of Vehicles expires on october 31, 2025, so the measure seeks to give drivers an additional year to continue using their license plates without the need for an immediate replacement.

The initiative will be studied by Parliament’s Infrastructure and Territorial Development Committee. If approved, vehicle owners will be able to continue using their current license plates at no additional cost until the new deadline, avoiding an expense that would affect the pockets of thousands of salvadorans.
Rodríguez emphasized that the proposal is part of policies to support family finances, since replacing license plates entails an outlay that, in the current context, is being postponed to provide greater liquidity to the population. He also emphasized that the measure will not affect the legality or security of vehicle identification.

The extension will also allow for better logistical and administrative planning for the renewal process, avoiding overcrowding at service centers and streamlining service when the mandatory change comes.
The government reaffirmed that this action is part of a broader strategy to protect the economy of Salvadoran households, prioritizing measures that avoid unnecessary expenses and facilitate compliance with vehicle registration obligations without placing financial pressure on the population.
