Within the framework of the National Cocoa Day, the Ministerio de Desarrollo Local (MINDEL) launches the program “Productive reforestation with high value cocoa”, a strategic government initiative that seeks to strengthen sustainable cocoa production with export quality, dynamizes the local economy and contributes to environmental conservation.
With an investment of more than seven million dollars, the program aims to reforest 600 apples of land through agroforestry system with cocoa adapted to local conditions. This intervention takes place in 14 prioritized districts and surrounding areas of the departments of Chalatenango, Morazán, and San Miguel.
For its execution, strategic alliances are established with the Ministry of Environment, CENTA and local governments, which allows to coordinate efforts and guarantees the technical and environmental accompaniment of the project. Likewise, the first distribution of 17,000 cocoa trees towards the areas of Morazán and Chalatenango is made, where the establishment of plots under irrigation with beneficiary producers, supervised and technically advised by program experts begins.
During its implementation, the program will generate more than eight thousand jobs, promoting local work, especially for women and young people in intervention areas.
The program focuses on four key components that generate an integral impact on the beneficiary territories and strengthen the cocoa value chain nationwide:
· Implementation of reforestation, generating employment for women and young people.
· Strengthening capacities for environmental management, ensuring responsible and resilient practices to climate change.
· Development of business plans and productive training.
· Institutional strengthening, to boost sustainability and cocoa value chain.
The government of President Nayib Bukele, through the Ministry of Local Development, undertakes to execute this project that positively impacts the quality of life of cacaocultor families, strengthens their productive capabilities and promotes environmental sustainability in the intervened territories.
