A. M. ANDA President Jorge Castaneda announced significant progress in the construction project for the Ilopango Water Treatment Plant, which will benefit seven districts in Greater San Salvador. With an investment of US$40 million and more than 50% progress, the plant is expected to be operational in august 2026, providing a new water source and a first-class distribution line for 250,000 residents.
Castaneda highlighted that this project is part of a broader strategy of historic investment in drinking water treatment and distribution systems, totaling US$265 million. The second stage of the plan includes the modernization of infrastructure with advanced technologies and elements that strengthen the large supply structures in the San Salvador Metropolitan Area, ensuring a more efficient and equitable service.
The works in progress include the Northern Zone System, which involves drilling new wells, modernizing the distribution network, and installing smart sensors to optimize network use. In addition, improvements are being made to the Torogoz distribution system with the aim of increasing supply capacity and ensuring a fairer distribution of water resources.
The president of ANDA also highlighted work completed ahead of schedule, such as the rehabilitation of a 3.2-kilometer section of the old road to Huizúcar, which required an investment of US$668,000. According to Castaneda, this project was more economical than past interventions, which cost around US$700,000 but only offered temporary solutions.
In addition to the master plan for the Metropolitan Area, ANDA is allocating resources to strengthen supply in Santa Ana, San Miguel, and La Unión, considered strategic development hubs. With these investments, the institution seeks not only to improve service coverage and quality but also to optimize the use of public funds, prioritizing durable projects with high social impact.
