The Infrastructure and Territorial Development Commission of the Legislative Assembly of El Salvador took a crucial step to safeguard the family economy of millions of salvadorans. The entity issued a favorable opinion seeking to extend the stability of public collective and mass transportation fares, a measure that, if approved, would be effective until the end of 2026.
This legislative move comes amid ongoing economic pressures and seeks to mitigate the impact of potential fare increases.

This initiative, promoted by the Ministry of Public Works, aims to guarantee the continuity and regularity of transportation services without altering the fares currently paid by users. The measure is a matter of public policy, and its implementation results in special compensation for concessionaires and permit holders. The law establishes a contribution of US$0.10 per gallon of diesel and gasoline to finance the subsidies, thus maintaining economic balance.
The ruling also proposes amending Article 17-A of the Transitional Law, extending the validity of the single funds registered with the General Directorate of Land Transportation until december 2026. This extension is essential for the functioning of the compensation mechanism, as these funds are the tool used for electronic collection and monitoring of the data necessary for the allocation of funds.

To receive compensation, transporters must meet several requirements, including submitting a sworn statement, using electronic collection systems and GPS in their vehicles, and ensuring all fines are paid. Compliance with these conditions is closely monitored by the Dirección General de Transporte Terrestre to ensure transparency and the proper use of resources.

It is important to note that the favorable opinion of the Comisión de Infraestructura y Desarrollo Territorial is only a first step. For this reform to become a reality, it still needs final approval by the full Legislative Assembly, which would grant it the status of law of the Republic. If approved, this extension will ensure that the cost of transportation remains unchanged, providing financial relief to the country’s families.
