The monthly cost of the basic food basket showed different trends between urban and rural areas during july 2016, compared to june of the same year. According to data from the Banco Central de Reserva (BCR), through the Oficina Nacional de Estadísticas y Censos (ONEC), the cost increased in urban areas, while it decreased in rural areas.
In urban areas, the monthly cost per family rose from US$259.95 in june to US$261.48 in july, an increase of US$1.53, equivalent to 0.59%. The daily cost per family increased from US$8.66 to US$8.71, while the daily cost per person rose from US$2.11 to US$2.12.
Among the products that increased in price in urban areas were rice, meat, fats, eggs, fruits, beans, vegetables, and sugar. The largest increase was in vegetables, while meat and beans also saw significant price hikes.
Some products decreased in value within the urban food basket. The main decreases were recorded in tortillas, fluid milk, and french bread. Thus, the increase in the urban food basket was primarily related to the price increases of foods that rose during july.
In contrast, rural areas saw a reduction in the monthly cost of the basic family food basket. The value fell from US$189.56 in june to US$186.50 in july, a decrease of US$3.05, equivalent to 1.61%. The daily cost per family decreased from US$6.31 to US$6.21, while the daily cost per person fell from US$1.34 to US$1.32. Considering the additional 10% allocated for cooking, the daily cost per person decreased from US$1.48 to US$1.45.
In rural areas, the products that increased in price were primarily beans, eggs, meat, and fats. Meanwhile, tortillas and fluid milk saw price reductions, with the decrease in tortillas being particularly notable. Sugar maintained its price throughout the period.
Overall, the comparison between june and july shows an opposite trend between the two areas: the urban basic food basket increased, while the rural one decreased. This resulted in a monthly cost per family of US$261.48 in urban areas and US$186.50 in rural areas as of the end of july 2026.
