The Ministry of Economy of El Salvador, led by minister María Luisa Hayem, continues to promote innovation and technological progress in the country. On this occasion, the Minister received the Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Daren Tang. This meeting represents an important step in the strategy of President Nayib Bukele’s government to promote technological development and modernization in several key areas of the national economy.
During Daren Tang’s visit, both leaders discussed the importance of intellectual property as a driver of innovation and competitiveness in El Salvador. Minister Hayem highlighted the need to strengthen mechanisms to protect local creations, which not only benefits salvadoran entrepreneurs, but also attracts foreign investment to the country. In this way, the government seeks to create an environment where innovation and knowledge are transformed into resources for economic and social development.
The agenda of the visit also included the launch of the National Strategy for the Promotion of Creativity, Innovation and Invention for Economic Development (ENPI) 2024-2029. This initiative represents a strategic framework that aims to support and protect the intellectual property of salvadoran innovators and entrepreneurs. The ENPI will serve as a fundamental tool for sustainable economic growth, supporting small and medium-sized enterprises in their efforts to innovate and compete in the global marketplace.
Daren Tang, originally from Singapore, has an outstanding track record in the field of intellectual property and international trade. Prior to his position at WIPO, Tang held leadership positions in his native country, where he led initiatives to promote innovation and trade. His visit to El Salvador marks an opportunity to strengthen collaboration between the two nations on intellectual property and technological development issues.
The salvadoran government’s commitment to innovation is reaffirmed with this alliance, which seeks to position the country as a reference in creativity and technology in the region. Minister Hayem and Daren Tang agreed on the importance of continuing to promote policies that protect the creations and rights of innovators, so that El Salvador advances on its path towards a knowledge economy that benefits all its citizens.
