A. M. The salvadoran government continues to promote the economic development of the country by strengthening air connectivity. The opening of the new direct route between El Salvador and Newark, New Jersey, operated by Volaris El Salvador, represents a key step in boosting tourism, trade, and mobility of salvadorans abroad, with a direct impact on strategic productive sectors.
This connection, which will have three weekly flights to Newark International Airport, the main airport in the New York metropolitan area, was inaugurated by the Minister of Tourism, Morena Valdez; the President of CEPA, Federico Anliker; and the Deputy Director of Flight Safety of the Civil Aviation Authority, Jaime Roberto Palomares. The measure responds to a government strategy to consolidate the country as a regional logistics hub.
“El Salvador’s modern infrastructure, strategic location and competitive conditions are positioning us as a regional passenger hub”, said Anliker. With this route, Volaris El Salvador expands its network in the United States, adding Newark to destinations such as Los Angeles, Washington, Houston, Oakland and Miami, with more than 2.5 million passengers carried since 2017.
Tourism growth also supports this effort: in 2023, El Salvador received 3.9 million visitors, mostly from the United States. As of june 2025, 2 million visitors have already been registered, approaching the goal of 4 million by the end of the year. This influx represents a strong economic boost for sectors such as hotels, transportation, commerce, and gastronomy.
Currently, El Salvador International Airport operates with 14 airlines and connects with more than 30 international destinations. The incorporation of this new route reinforces the Government’s vision of turning the country into a regional reference in air connectivity, economic growth, and attraction of tourism investments.
