The Government of the Republic continues to demonstrate concrete results in the modernization of the national port system. According to the Unión Portuaria del Pacífico, the elimination of the congestion surcharge at the Port of Acajutla has resulted in savings exceeding US$200 million, directly benefiting importers, exporters, and industries that depend on maritime trade.
Luis Canto, general manager of the Unión Portuaria del Pacífico, explained that when they took over management in december 2014, the port faced severe congestion that caused prolonged delays in servicing ships and a US$1,000 surcharge per container for shipping lines. This additional cost affected the country’s competitiveness and increased the cost of trade.
Thanks to coordinated efforts between the Presidential Palace, the Ministry of Public Works, and other institutions, a diagnostic study was conducted with the productive sectors to identify the main bottlenecks. As a result, in april of this year the flow of containers normalized and the surcharge was completely eliminated.
The effects were immediate: greater logistical efficiency, reduced costs, and a more competitive port environment, all of which contribute to boosting foreign trade and strengthening the salvadoran economy.
Today, dawn at the Puerto of Acajutla reflects not only a terminal in constant motion, but also the transformation driven by the modernization of infrastructure and logistical processes, which continue to solidify El Salvador as a more efficient and attractive country for international trade.
