75% of tourism businesses in El Salvador belong to the small and medium-sized enterprise (SMEs) sector, making them fundamental pillars of the country’s economic growth. Within the framework of the strategies promoted by the Government of El Salvador, these companies are playing a key role in the transition toward a sustainable tourism model, which not only promotes economic well-being but also environmental conservation and strengthens the social fabric.

The current focus is on providing these SMEs with effective tools, such as financial education and access to credit, so they can consolidate and expand their impact in the communities where they operate. Through initiatives led by the Ministerio de Turismo and with the support of organizations such as Davivienda, a favorable environment is being created for these companies to grow sustainably, generating local employment and adding value to the country’s tourist destinations.

During a meeting held under the theme “Sustainable tourism is your future and your greatest competitive advantage”, representatives from the public sector, business leaders, and international organizations highlighted the importance of promoting regenerative tourism. This model, increasingly attractive to new generations, seeks not only to preserve ecosystems but also to restore them, involving tourists in activities such as turtle releases and reforestation of natural areas.
El Salvador is consolidating its position as a regional leader by demonstrating that economic development and environmental protection can go hand in hand. Thanks to the leadership of tourism SMEs, the country is moving toward a more inclusive, dynamic, and sustainable economy, where natural and cultural wealth is transformed into a renewable asset that benefits everyone.
