Volaris Costa Rica, the Costa Rican flag carrier ultra-low-cost airline operating in Central America, Mexico, and the United States, announces the launch of its new direct route between San José, Costa Rica (SJO) and Comayagua/Tegucigalpa, Honduras (XPL). This strategic connection reinforces the company’s vision of bringing more Central Americans closer to the region at affordable fares, stimulating tourism, business opportunities, and family visits.
With this new route, Volaris Costa Rica is responding to a latent demand from travelers who, until now, had to connect via San Salvador or Panama City to complete their trip. The direct flight will significantly reduce travel times, simplify the travel experience, and save costs, opening new opportunities for diverse passenger segments.
This is a route designed for all Central Americans: families living in Costa Rica and Honduras will be able to visit each other more frequently thanks to ultra-low fares and reduced travel time; and for leisure tourism, as Costa Ricans will find a unique cultural and archaeological destination in Honduras, while Hondurans will be able to enjoy Costa Rica’s established ecotourism offering; of course, also for the benefit of the business and government sectors, which will benefit from a connection that allows for flexible one- or two-day trips; and of course, for multi-destination tourism in Central America, as the route enables travel circuits such as Tegucigalpa, Honduras to San José, Costa Rica – Guatemala – El Salvador, the United States, and Mexico, promoting more accessible regional tourism.

“With the launch of sales of the new direct route between San José, Costa Rica, and Tegucigalpa, Honduras, Volaris Costa Rica confirms its commitment to Central American connectivity, offering an efficient route network between Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. Our arrival in new destinations is always characterized by increasing the point-to-point travel ratio, thanks to our ultra-low fares, which is especially important for business travelers, who predominantly use this route. In this way, we support the growth of micro and small entrepreneurs, as well as expanding companies, to contribute to the development of local economies”, said Ronny Rodríguez, director of Corporate Development and Sustainability at Volaris.
“The San José–Tegucigalpa route will make it easier for more Costa Ricans and Hondurans to visit each other, whether for family, work, or tourism. It is a step that brings our people closer together and generates shared benefits for both economies”, said William Rodríguez, minister of Tourism of Costa Rica.
“As sister countries, we celebrate regaining a direct connection with Costa Rica, boosting multi-destination tourism and economic integration. This also allows citizens of both countries to enjoy intraregional tourism and our beautiful countries, thanks to Volaris for believing in Central America”, said Yadira Gómez, minister of Tourism of Honduras.

The opening of this route will generate benefits for both countries, increasing tourist arrivals to and from Costa Rica and Honduras, a greater flow of business travelers and participation in regional conferences and fairs, as well as consolidating Palmerola as an international hub for the center of the country, with a positive impact on hotels, restaurants, and ground transportation to Tegucigalpa.
“With the opening of this new direct route to Tegucigalpa, Juan Santamaría Airport has direct connections to all Central American capitals, strengthening regional integration and expanding passenger mobility opportunities. This advancement not only facilitates business and leisure travel within the region, but also boosts cultural exchange and encourages multi-destination tourism by offering travelers an increasingly efficient route network. At AERIS, we celebrate this joint achievement with Volaris Costa Rica, convinced that it will contribute to the economic development and competitiveness of both countries”, commented Ricardo Hernández, Executive Director of AERIS, operator of Juan Santamaría International Airport.
“Palmerola International Airport congratulates Volaris Costa Rica for its commitment to air connectivity, which will allow a direct, low-cost connection between two of Central America’s most important capital cities. As an airport, we are very pleased with the launch of Volaris flights. This new route represents an important step in strengthening tourism, trade, and cultural relations between the two countries. We recognize not only the strong position of Costa Rica and Honduras in international tourism, but also their unique connectivity potential between Central America and other parts of the world, which highlights our role as a vital strategic hub for global business and collaboration between countries. We firmly believe that Volaris will bring significant added value to Honduras”, said Israel Dávila, General Manager of Palmerola International Airport.
The route will have four weekly frequencies—Mondays, wednesdays, fridays, and sundays—with schedules designed to serve both business and leisure travelers, optimizing short-stay stays.
True to its ultra-low-cost model, Volaris Costa Rica will offer a competitive base fare to which each customer can add only the services they need (baggage, seat selection, priority boarding, among others).
