Jorge García, a salvadoran farmer by birth with a history deeply rooted in the countryside, has become an inspiring example of resilience and growth thanks to the support of Walmart El Salvador’s Tierra Fértil program.
Originally from a family dedicated for generations to coffee cultivation, García experienced the challenges faced by this industry in the face of falling international prices. This situation led him to reinvent himself, diversifying his agricultural production with the cultivation of silk guineo. It was precisely this product that caught the attention of Walmart, and in 2018 he was invited to become an official supplier of the chain, through the Tierra Fértil program.
Since then, his farm “Los Tierritas” has evolved strongly. Thanks to the technical advice provided by Walmart, García not only increased his productivity, but also diversified his crops. Currently, he harvests date banana, orchard leaf, papaya, snack tomato, ayote, cilantro, radish and, recently, green, and sweet chili. What began as a monthly delivery has transformed into a daily operation, generating new sources of employment and allowing him to invest in more vehicles for the distribution of his products.
“I remember the first time I wanted to buy a truck it was difficult, no company trusted us. Today I am already thinking of buying my fourth one”, said Jorge García, who was very excited and thanked Walmart for opening its doors to him and for all the support he received.
The farmer also took the opportunity to invite more producers to join the Tierra Fértil program: “Walmart not only buys our products; it also teaches us how to improve. This is a real opportunity to grow.
The Tierra Fértil program, one of Walmart Central America’s strongest initiatives, seeks to support small and medium-sized farmers by transferring technical knowledge, responsible agricultural practices, and stable and direct commercial relationships. This support contributes to strengthening the agricultural sector and the economic development of rural communities in El Salvador.
Walmart thus reaffirms its commitment to local production and the progress of agricultural microenterprises in El Salvador.
