The Banco Central de Reserva de El Salvador (BCR) released an informational message aimed at people who frequently use cash, explaining how to verify the authenticity of banknotes in a matter of seconds by reviewing their main security features.
The institution explained that recognizing a genuine banknote is a simple process if you know some key elements incorporated into the design of the paper money. These characteristics allow any citizen to quickly confirm if the money they receive is authentic, thus avoiding potential fraud or scams.
Quick banknote verification
According to the BCR, there are several practical ways to check the authenticity of a banknote. The first step is to hold it up to the light. When doing so, two fundamental security features should appear:
A security thread embedded within the paper.
The watermark with the portrait, visible when held up to the light and which is part of the banknote’s design.
These elements are incorporated into the banknote manufacturing process and cannot be easily replicated with common printing methods.
Color change when tilting the bill
Another detail that allows you to verify its authenticity is found in the number located in the lower right corner of the $50 bill. According to the Banco Central de Reserva de El Salvador (BCR) when you tilt or rotate the bill, this number changes color, going from copper to green.
This visual effect is achieved using special ink that reacts to light and the viewing angle, a technology used in various currencies around the world to make counterfeiting more difficult.
Texture is also a security feature
In addition to looking at the bill, the BCR recommends touching it. The paper used in genuine banknotes has a particular texture: it is firm and slightly rough.
In some areas of the design, especially the main elements, the bill has raised relief, allowing you to feel certain raised areas when you run your fingers over the surface. This tactile detail is also part of the security features.
Simple method for recognizing money
The institution highlights that combining three basic actions allows you to quickly recognize a genuine banknote:
Hold the banknote up to the light
Tilt the banknote to observe color changes
Touch the paper to identify its texture

Legal tender in the country
The Banco Central also reminded the public that the $50 banknote is legal tender in El Salvador and can be used in any transaction within the country.
