The Legislative Assembly of El Salvador approved with 56 votes the amendment to the Budget Law 2024, incorporating US$39.77 million to the Comisión Ejecutiva Portuaria Autónoma (CEPA) for the development of the aeronautical sector. These funds seek to modernize and build infrastructure that optimizes air connectivity costs and times.
The financing comes from a loan with the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF) and will be used for the program “Development of El Salvador’s aeronautical sector: El Salvador flies. This plan includes the construction of the Pacific International Airport in La Unión, one of the key projects.
In addition to this airport, the program includes the remodeling and modernization of the Ilopango airport in San Salvador and the construction of the Tonalá aerodrome in Sonsonate. Complementary environmental and social studies, as well as institutional strengthening, are also foreseen.
The reform was carried out during the 32nd plenary session, affecting the Public Works and Transportation branches, with the purpose of boosting the country’s economic competitiveness and air connectivity.
The purpose of these projects is to boost the eastern region, turning it into an engine of economic and tourist development. The port of La Unión will also play a crucial role in this strategy, promoting investment and regional integration.
The modernization and expansion of the aeronautical infrastructure is projected as a key step to improve connectivity and strengthen El Salvador’s economy, boosting its national and international growth.
