A loan of US$195,000,000 was ratified by the deputies of the Legislative Assembly, with 56 votes, to carry out expansion and modernization works at Aeropuerto Internacional Óscar Arnulfo Romero, with the aim of strengthening the country’s air connectivity and improving the quality of services for users.
The funds, granted by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), will finance the second phase of the passenger terminal expansion, the extension of the aircraft apron, and the construction of a new taxiway, as part of a comprehensive project to modernize the country’s main airport. Lawmakers explained that this investment seeks to strengthen airport infrastructure and the operational capabilities of Comisión Ejecutiva Portuaria Autónoma (CEPA), the entity responsible for airport administration.
The financing process began on December 18, 2025, when the Legislative Assembly authorized the government to arrange the loan, which was signed with the IDB on january 13, 2026. With legislative ratification, the project enters the implementation phase, allowing the planned works to begin.

Among the main interventions is the expansion of the passenger terminal, incorporating infrastructure with universal accessibility for people with disabilities or limited mobility, which seeks to ensure a more inclusive airport. In addition, six new waiting rooms with wide corridors and natural lighting will be built, designed to improve passenger comfort.
The project also includes the installation of six new boarding bridges, bringing the airport’s total to 25, facilitating operations and reducing boarding and disembarking times. A vehicle parking building and a building for rescue services and a fire station will also be constructed, strengthening the operational safety of the airport terminal.
Another key project is the expansion of the aircraft parking apron, which will allow for three additional aircraft, including wide-body aircraft. This improvement will increase the number of routes, frequencies, and destinations, consolidating the country as a strategic air connectivity hub in the region.

According to lawmakers, the airport’s modernization will boost economic activity, especially in the tourism, trade, and logistics sectors, by facilitating the arrival of more visitors and improving the country’s competitiveness as an investment and air transit destination.
With this loan, the government seeks to strengthen the country’s strategic infrastructure and position Aeropuerto Internacional Óscar Arnulfo Romero as a regional hub, aligned with international standards of quality, safety, and accessibility.
