El Salvador is developing comprehensive strategies to streamline traffic in the San Salvador Metropolitan Area (AMSS), after the country’s vehicle fleet maintained sustained growth of 8% per year, currently reaching 1.9 million registered vehicles.
According to Félix Serrano, director General of Traffic at the Viceministerio de Transporte (VMT), nearly one million vehicles circulate daily in the AMSS, generating high demand on the country’s main arteries. In response to this situation, the government has implemented operational and technological measures to improve mobility and reduce travel times.

“We have between 200 and 300 traffic managers active every day on the national network, implementing control devices. In addition, reversible lanes operate at strategic points such as bulevar Constitución, bulevar del Ejército and bulevar Venezuela Boulevard during peak hours”, explained Serrano, who also highlighted the joint work with the Policía Nacional Civil (PNC).
The authorities also use technological tools and an urban monitoring center, which analyzes traffic speed, travel times, and vehicle flow to optimize decision-making.

Among the medium-term strategic projects, the construction of the Metrocable stands out, which will connect the Mejicanos district with the Historic Center of San Salvador. “This system will guarantee predictable travel times and more efficient mobility for thousands of citizens”, said Serrano.
With these actions, the government seeks to improve the quality of life of salvadorans by promoting a modern, safe, and sustainable transportation system that responds to the growth of the vehicle fleet and the needs of an expanding capital city.
