The governments of El Salvador and the United States signed a Memorandum of Understanding to promote cooperation in peaceful and responsible nuclear energy. The agreement was signed by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and salvadoran Foreign Minister Alexandra Hill, marking a step towards the development of nuclear projects in the Central American country with U.S. technical and scientific support.
The memorandum establishes a strategic alliance to promote the development of nuclear energy under the highest safety standards and international regulations. Among its objectives are the strengthening of energy security, the search for sustainable solutions and the promotion of mutual economic prosperity. Both countries pledged to align their efforts with the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and to promote responsible uses of this technology.
Salvadoran president, Nayib Bukele, highlighted in his X account that “the United States has committed to help El Salvador in the development of nuclear energy”. The agreement will include support in nuclear infrastructure, regulatory training, joint research projects and improvement of scientific capabilities, according to a press release from the Presidential House.
The document stresses that the cooperation does not generate binding legal obligations, and that all activities derived from it will be governed by the national laws of each nation. This seeks to guarantee transparency and respect for the legal frameworks of both countries during the implementation of initiatives.
With this agreement, El Salvador explores alternatives to diversify its energy matrix and reduce its dependence on traditional sources, while the U.S. strengthens its technological and energy influence in the region. The Memorandum of Understanding represents a milestone in the bilateral relationship, although its impact will depend on concrete advances in the coming years.
