The U.S. Embassy in El Salvador commemorated the 25th anniversary of the september 11, 2001, terrorist attacks this thursday with a ceremony honoring the victims, recognizing the bravery of emergency responders, and reaffirming the commitment to keep alive the memory of one of the most impactful events in recent history.
During the ceremony, Naomi Fellows, a U.S. Embassy representative, highlighted that September 11 profoundly changed the United States and marked a turning point in how the country understands security and global threats. She noted that the date remains a reminder of the importance of unity, resilience, and the defense of democratic values.
Fellows recalled that nearly 3,000 people lost their lives in the attacks and emphasized that the tragedy affected not only the United States but also families of various nationalities, including Salvadorans. She noted that many communities around the world shared the grief caused by the attacks and continued to remember those who perished.
The diplomatic representative also paid tribute to the police officers, firefighters, emergency medical personnel, and citizens who participated in rescue efforts. She noted that many of them risked or lost their lives while attempting to save people trapped amidst the emergency.
She further highlighted that one of the key legacies of September 11 was the ability of Americans to stand united in the face of adversity. She stated that although the attacks sought to sow fear, division, and despair, the response was a display of solidarity—both within the United States and from other countries that expressed their support.
In her speech, Fellows noted that a nation’s greatest strength lies in its people—in their capacity to act with courage, solidarity, and determination when facing difficult situations. She added that these lessons remain relevant 25 years after the attacks.
The official also highlighted the collaboration between the United States and El Salvador, noting that both nations maintain a relationship based on cooperation in areas such as diplomacy, security, consular services, trade, development, and institutional strengthening.
As she explained, the joint efforts of both countries contribute to building more resilient communities and strengthening the bonds of friendship that have characterized the bilateral relationship for decades. Furthermore, she emphasized that vigilance in the face of threats should not be confused with fear but rather viewed as preparedness and a commitment to protecting people.
Fellows maintained that remembering September 11 entails an ongoing responsibility for new generations. In this context, she called for preserving the memory of the victims, honoring those who acted heroically during the emergency, and continuing to uphold principles such as freedom, human dignity, and respect for the rule of law.
The ceremony concluded with a tribute to the victims and survivors of the attacks, as well as an acknowledgment of the families who continue to live with the aftermath of that tragedy. The embassy reiterated that the memory of september 11 remains a symbol of unity and resilience for the United States and its allies.
