A. M. The Defensoría del Consumidor (DC) revealed the results of its most recent survey on consumer habits for Mother’s Day, highlighting that 74% of salvadorans will celebrate this special date. The survey, conducted between april 22 and may 1 with a sample of 1,634 people, shows that most do so out of gratitude or because “Mom deserves it”
According to DC President Ricardo Salazar, lunch at home is the preferred way to celebrate for 52% of respondents, followed by going out to restaurants (21%), family outings (12%), and gift-giving (11%). Only 4% will opt for takeout. Furthermore, lunch is the most popular time of day to celebrate, with 52% choosing it versus 46% who prefer dinner.
As for gifts, clothing tops the list with 38% preference, followed by cakes (37%), flower arrangements (35%), lotions and creams (30%), cash (28%), and footwear (27%). Personal accessories such as wallets, watches, and bracelets are also among the most popular options, with 18% choosing more than one option.
Shopping malls are positioned as the primary shopping destination with a 73% preference, while 22% will buy from entrepreneurs and 16% from online stores. Twenty-nine percent will purchase gifts through social media and websites, demonstrating a growing trend toward digital commerce.
In terms of spending, 47% of consumers plan to spend between US$30 and US$60 on gifts, 22% between US$60 and US$90, and 18% less than US$30. Another 13% plan to spend more than US$90. Cash remains the most used payment method (59%), followed by debit cards (22%) and credit cards (16%).
Additionally, Salazar announced that this thursday the “Who’s Who” in cake and flower prices will be published, a comparative tool that seeks to facilitate informed decisions and promote family savings during this important celebration.
