The Legislative Assembly approved, with 57 votes, the extension of the Nuclear Energy Law until june 28, 2026, with the aim of incorporating recommendations from specialized international organizations and ensuring adequate harmonization of the regulatory framework.
The Nuclear Energy Law, approved on october 22, 2024, and published in the Official Gazette six days later, was initially scheduled to enter into force on october 28, 2025. With the reform, El Salvador will become the first country in the region to have a legal framework for the development of nuclear energy.
Economic and energy impact
According to the presentation made at the 74th plenary session, the regulations will allow the country to diversify its energy matrix and generate electricity continuously, every day of the year, with more stable and predictable prices compared to hydrocarbons.
The use of this technology will reduce dependence on international markets and oil-exporting countries, in addition to lowering operating costs in the electricity sector. This will lead to greater stability in energy rates and compliance with international commitments regarding decarbonization.
Regulation and security
The regulations contemplate the creation of an institutional structure for the regulation, control, and supervision of nuclear facilities and activities. The government has reaffirmed its commitment to the peaceful use of this energy source through international treaties that establish strict physical and technological security measures.
With this extension, El Salvador is preparing to consolidate a long-term energy strategy that strengthens legal security, encourages investment, and guarantees a sustainable supply of electricity for the benefit of the population and economic competitiveness.
