The Vice Minister of Agricultura y Ganadería (MAG), Óscar Domínguez, said that the proactive measures implemented for the 2026 agricultural cycle are yielding positive results and will guarantee the supply of corn and beans in the country this year and next.
According to the official, the projection for the first agricultural cycle exceeds 12 million quintals of corn and more than 1.2 million quintals of beans. These estimates are based on yields obtained from more than 164,000 blocks (approximately 164,000 acres) cultivated within the Programa de Aumento a la Producción, not including areas planted by farmers who participated independently.
Domínguez explained that one of the key factors in achieving these results was the technical decision to advance planting and take advantage of the transitional rains recorded between the end of april and the beginning of may. This strategy, he noted, was accompanied by technical assistance and support provided to producers through the Programa de Aumento a la Producción.
The vice minister indicated that the harvests began several weeks ago and that production will continue to increase in the coming days as the harvest progresses in the various agricultural zones of the country.

“I want to be clear: we will have enough corn and beans for this year and next”, the official said, referring to production projections.
He also maintained that the decisions adopted by the Ministry of Agriculture were questioned at the time by some sectors, who recommended delaying planting until mid-june. However, he asserted that the results obtained support the implemented strategy and considered that the recommendations, lacking technical support, may have affected some producers who chose to follow them.
Domínguez also reported that the government is already moving toward the second planting cycle, which will have infrastructure support to reduce dependence on rainfall. He explained that more than 60% of the acreage designated for this cycle will have supplemental irrigation.

As part of this strategy, the Ministry of Agriculture continues to expand productive infrastructure by installing mobile irrigation systems, drilling wells, constructing wells, and implementing water reservoirs, with the goal of strengthening national production and addressing the effects of climate variability.
The official added that the modernization of the agricultural sector also includes the distribution of high-quality seeds with higher yields and greater tolerance to diseases and drought, as well as mechanization processes and technical support for producers.
With these actions, the Ministry of Agriculture seeks to increase the production of staple grains, strengthen food security, and reduce dependence on weather conditions to maintain a stable supply in the country.
