The Tribunal Supremo Electoral (TSE) reported that El Salvador’s Electoral Registry reached 6,517,342 registered citizens as of july 15, 2016. Of this total, 5,544,825 salvadorans are registered nationwide, while 972,517 are salvadorans residing abroad.
This figure reflects the registration of eligible citizens on the electoral roll and includes both those living in El Salvador and those residing outside the country. The inclusion of salvadorans abroad allows for an updated registry of the population that can exercise their electoral rights from other countries, in accordance with the provisions established for voting abroad.
The TSE emphasized the importance of citizens keeping their personal information up to date, especially data related to their Documento Único de Identidad (DUI). Having accurate information facilitates voter registration processes and allows citizens to verify that their data is properly registered.
With the 2027 elections approaching, the electoral body reminded Salvadorans of the importance of reviewing and keeping their DUI information up to date. This can help avoid problems when voting and facilitate the electoral participation process.
Of the total registered voters, the majority are citizens registered within the national territory, with more than 5.5 million people, while nearly one million registered salvadorans reside abroad. This distribution illustrates the size of the voter registry and the participation of the diaspora within the salvadoran electoral system.
Therefore, TSE urges citizens to verify that their personal data is correct and up-to-date before the next election. Keeping information current makes the voting process simpler and reduces potential difficulties related to identification data.
